Catalysis
Catalysts are used as both accelerators of a chemical reaction and also selectors, enabling a reaction to work in a certain desired way. One of the main applications for zirconium oxide is in pollution control catalysts in vehicles where it reduces the emissions of toxic pollutants. Zirconium oxide catalysts are also used in the manufacturing of chemicals and the refining of petroleum. Zirconium compounds such as zirconium oxychloride, zirconium sulphate, zirconium hydroxide and zirconium oxynitrate among others are used in an extensive range of catalysts for hydrogenation, oxidation and isomerisation.
